International Volunteer Day, 2019
On 5th December every year, the world celebrates on the occasion of the International Volunteer Day. The theme of this year was “Volunteer for an inclusive future”
The International Volunteer Day (IVD) was designated by the United Nations in 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. It is an opportunity for volunteers, and volunteer organizations, to raise awareness of and gain an understanding of, the contribution they make to their communities.
It’s also a great opportunity day to promote volunteerism and encourage all the volunteers for the amazing work they are doing for their communities. During this day, Volunteer associations organize volunteer activities and other awareness session activities.
Here in Somalia, the Somali Youth Volunteers for Development Association in abbreviation SOYVDA organized an event of the occasion of this day. SOYVDA which is the largest volunteer movement here in Somalia promotes volunteerism across the country. SOYVDA currently has more than two hundred volunteers in and out of the country. We also have different chapters across the country.
The main aim of the event was to commemorate the occasion of the IVD. Our volunteer members shared their volunteer experience and the story behind to do volunteerism. And then there were presentations about the importance of volunteering and why it’s crucial to volunteer.
Eventually, all the members agreed that they will continue to volunteer their time and skills in order to give back to their communities
